TPN ADMINISTRATION GUIDE:

1. Gather supplies                                 * Make sure all clamps are open before infusing

     a) BAG OF TPN                               * Never use excessive force to flush PICC line

     b) IV TUBING                                   * Plug pump into wall if stationary for several hours

     c) ALCOHOL PADS

     d) IV PUMP

     e) 2 SYRINGES W/ 10 CC SALINE (white cap)

     f) 1 SYRINGE W/ 5 CC HEPARIN (yellow cap)

     g) 1 SYRINGE W/ NEEDLE FOR MVI

2. Wash your hands

3. Draw up multivitamins to add to TPN.  It is easier to hold bottle upside down and use a push/pull motion to fill syringe.

4. Inject medications into far left port on TPN bag (label facing you).  Rock bag on TPN back and forth gently several times to mix.

5. Unwrap tubing

6. Close slide clamp on tubing

7. Place TPN on flat surface with label facing up. Pull the clear tab off of far right port of TPN & pull protective cover off tubing spike

8. Insert spike into appropriate port (not the foil covered one and not the clamped fill port) on TPN bag – firmly twisting while pushing at the same time.

9. Open slide clamp. Now the tubing will begin to fill with TPN (prime).

Make sure the tubing hangs below the bag of TPN. Let the fluid fill the tubing and filter until it reaches the end of the tubing (drips from end).
